A pivotal event is a significant Domain Event that marks a key point in a process: only after it occurs can subsequent events happen. Identifying one helps a group structure an otherwise difficult timeline. section 3.2.1
Use pivotal events to make collaborative modeling more manageable:
- Indicate emerging pivotal events as milestones on the timeline. section 3.2.1
- Move events to the left or right of a pivotal event to create meaningful subgroups of work. section 3.2.1
- When more than seven people are modeling an in-depth problem, split groups around pivotal events and merge their results through a walkthrough. section 4.5.2
Planning Finalized
In a Big Picture EventStorming for BigScreen, the group identifies Planning Finalized as a pivotal event. Customers can start reserving tickets only after it occurs. Participants split the timeline on either side of that milestone, then clean up their portions before reconverging. section 4.5.2
Figure 4.17 Zoomed in part of a Big Picture EventStorming showing how a pivotal event can help split the large group into smaller groups
Use the visual model to see how one pivotal event divides a large EventStorming timeline into smaller areas of collaborative work. section 4.5.2
