Business impact analysis

As explained in Data-Driven Cybersecurity

Business impact analysis is a process for evaluating how disruptions, risks, or vulnerabilities could affect organizational operations and objectives.

Business impact analysis brings operational context into vulnerability prioritization. A severity score alone does not show how much a vulnerable system matters to the organization. Consider the potential effect on business operations before deciding what to correct first. section 6.3.2

Same severity, different priority

An equally severe vulnerability may deserve faster attention in a mission-critical production database than in a low-risk test environment. Weigh that impact alongside exploit likelihood, threat intelligence, and compensating controls. The aim is to direct corrective effort toward the greatest risk reduction, rather than treating every high severity score alike. section 6.3.2

How Data-Driven Cybersecurity covers it

How deep it goes
Illustrates the prioritization decision but does not give a formal business impact analysis procedure.
Examples
Compares an equally severe vulnerability in a production database with one in a low-risk test environment.
What you can do after
Evaluate/understand which vulnerabilities merit attention based on operational importance rather than severity alone.
How it connects
Connects business impact to CVSS, EPSS, threat intelligence, compensating controls, and risk-based vulnerability prioritization.
