Deduplication removes or suppresses repeated records that represent one logical occurrence. In ingestion architectures, it is a stateful transformation applied before committing data to Iceberg, especially when streams arrive continuously or out of order. section 6.2.3 section 6.4.2
Production deduplication must account for:
- State management and checkpointing, which support reliable processing across streaming events. section 6.4.2
- Late-arriving and out-of-order data, handled through Flink event-time semantics. section 6.4.2
- Commit frequency, compaction, and metadata growth when results flow into Iceberg. section 6.5.2
Media-event ingestion
A streaming-media platform processes more than 100 billion daily playback and interaction events. Apache Flink consumes Kafka streams, applies deduplication and partitioning, then commits bounded results to Iceberg while checkpointing supports exactly-once delivery. section 6.5.2 section 6.4.2
