Flask is a lightweight Python web framework for building web applications and HTTP services. Its small core leaves developers free to choose supporting tools instead of imposing the broader defaults associated with heavier frameworks. section 3.7.2
Use Flask to:
- Create routes that handle HTTP requests, such as a root path serving an application page. section 5.3.5
- Connect application logic to databases, retrieve records, and pass data into HTML templates. section 5.3.5
- Expose task data through a REST API when pairing Flask with a frontend such as Vue. section 1.8.1
Database-backed entry point
A small Flask application can initialize the framework, define a route for '/', retrieve questions through a database connection and model class, render index.html, and run with debugging enabled during development. section 5.3.5
from flask import Flask, render_template
from app.models.database_connection import DatabaseConnection
from app.models.questions import Questions
app = Flask(__name__)
@app.route('/')
def index():
db_path = 'data/questions.db'
# Call the function and store the returned data in a variable
with DatabaseConnection(db_path) as cursor:
questions = Questions(cursor)
data = questions.fetch_data()
# Return the HTML template for the index page
return render_template('index.html', data=data)
if __name__ == "__main__":
app.run(debug=True)
