An integrated development environment combines coding tools, but it does not belong on a production server by default. Installing Visual Studio there adds components and services, enlarges the attack surface, and creates a developer back door into production. section 8.4
Use this safer operating pattern:
- Run IDEs on developers’ workstations and connect them to databases hosted on the development server. section 8.4
- Treat an IDE on a development server as an exception, not as a requirement for production SSIS or business-intelligence servers. section 8.4
When remote development is justified
A large data-warehouse SSIS project required months of full data for meaningful transformations. Limited workstation RAM and an impractical VPN made Remote Desktop Protocol to the development server the workable exception. section 8.4
Use the decision tree to assess whether Server Core fits the deployment and whether a graphical environment is genuinely necessary. section 8.4
