kube-proxy is a Kubernetes component installed on every node. It enables Service communication by creating forwarding rules that direct Service traffic to the associated Pods. section 1.6 section 2.1.4
Use these operational distinctions when inspecting a cluster:
- Find kube-proxy among the kube-system Pods running across worker nodes. section 2.1.4
- Relate a Service to its selected Pods and the forwarding rules kube-proxy creates for that Service. section 1.6 section 2.1.4
- Check kube-proxy and the cluster CNI when investigating connectivity or network problems. section 8.4
Inspect kube-proxy in kind
Run `kubectl get po -o wide -A | grep worker` and verify a kube-proxy Pod is Running on the worker. In a kind cluster, kube-proxy appears alongside kindnet, while containerd provides the container runtime. section 2.1.4
Figure 1.9 The role of the worker node is to run the application workloads. It also contains kubelet, kube-proxy, and the container runtime (e.g., containerd).
Use the worker-node architecture to locate kube-proxy alongside kubelet and the container runtime, separate from control-plane responsibilities. section 1.6
