A partial configuration keeps environment-specific or sensitive settings outside infrastructure code. In a Terraform backend block, hardcode only stable values such as the scheme, then supply the remaining Consul settings during initialization. section 6.4.3
Supply the omitted backend settings through one of these methods:
- Pass individual values with repeated `-backend-config` flags; command-line values override configuration-file values, and later duplicates win. section 6.4.3
- Avoid interactive prompting when automation or repeatable deployments require explicit initialization inputs. section 6.4.3
Initialize a partially configured Consul backend
Declare `backend "consul" { scheme = "https" }` in the Terraform configuration, then provide `address`, `path`, and `access_token` through a backend configuration file or `terraform init` flags. Keep credentials out of committed code, while remembering that supplied parameters are saved on disk. section 6.4.3
