A platform group is one team or several teams that provide shared capabilities to stream-aligned teams. By reducing cognitive load, it helps those teams focus on their core mission and improve flow. section 11.2.1 section 11.6
Platform groups can take several forms:
- An internal developer platform can provide infrastructure, tooling, and self-service capabilities. section 11.2.1
- A horizontal platform can contain domain logic, such as Uber’s fulfillment platform. section 11.2.1
- A platform grouping may contain multiple teams, including nested platform groupings or teams using other team types. section 11.2.1
A usable platform
A platform group should make common capabilities easy to consume through well-documented self-service. A steady stream of tickets from stream-aligned teams signals possible usability problems or a platform bottleneck that needs investigation. section 11.2.1
Figure 11.4 Platform groupings are typically composed of multiple teams (they can be any of the four team types, including nested platform groupings).
Use the team-topology diagram to see how a platform grouping can combine multiple teams and nested groupings. section 11.2.1
