A qualification is a skill, area of knowledge, experience, or other attribute that supports suitability for a job. When asked why an employer should hire you, translate the question into: what are your strongest qualifications, and what makes your combination distinctive? section 2.14 section 10.10
Build a convincing qualification summary by:
- Selecting three to five skills, knowledge areas, or experiences that directly fit the job. section 2.14
- Explaining the unique combination you bring, such as having A and B together with C and D. section 2.14
- Supporting claims with specific work, individual or team contributions, and measurable results. section 2.14 section 10.10
- Balancing confidence with humility instead of relying on superlatives or unsupported praise. section 2.14
From claim to evidence
An ineffective answer says, “I’m awesome” and describes work as “really great” or “a big difference.” A stronger answer identifies the relevant skill, explains the action taken, and gives the result. For example, instead of merely mentioning a marketing idea that “made quite a splash,” explain how it reached potential customers and what measurable response it produced. section 10.10 section 2.14
