A blob container is a logical grouping for binary large objects inside an Azure storage account. Blobs can be images, email attachments, static website files, or other binary data. Think of the storage account as a cupboard and the container as one labeled drawer. section 2.2.3 section 2.5
Containers fit into Azure solutions in several practical ways:
- Store email attachments for an image-processing service. section 2.2.3
- Hold static website files in a storage account. section 9.2.1
- Control access from fully private to anonymous blob access, depending on the scenario. section 2.5
Creating a container for a static website
A deployment can create a container named $web, then use AzCopy to transfer the website files into it. The command must authenticate with Entra ID or a Shared Access Signature (SAS) token; otherwise, anyone could attempt to create a container in the account. section 9.2.1
C:/> azcopy make "https://banningstorage.blob.core.windows.net/$web"
The AzCopy command shows the concrete naming pattern for creating the $web container in a storage account. section 9.2.1
