Target qubit

As explained in Quantum Programming in Depth

A target qubit is a qubit on which a controlled gate conditionally performs its operation.

A target qubit is acted on conditionally by a controlled gate. The operation applies when every control qubit is in |1⟩; otherwise, the target remains unchanged. Superposition states follow by linearity. section 2.3.1

Target behavior in a CNOT

For a CNOT with the left qubit as control and the right as target, |10⟩ becomes |11⟩ and |11⟩ becomes |10⟩. When the control is |0⟩, |00⟩ and |01⟩ remain unchanged. section 2.3.1

How Quantum Programming in Depth covers it

How deep it goes
Defines conditional action, basis-state behavior, and superposition linearity, while deferring controlled-gate matrix forms.
Examples
Uses CNOT transformations of |10⟩, |11⟩, |00⟩, and |01⟩ to demonstrate target behavior.
What it assumes
Uses basis states, superposition, linearity, and Dirac notation as the working language for analysis.
What you can do after
Evaluate controlled-gate effects on basis states and superpositions using Dirac notation.
How it connects
Connects target qubits with controlled gates, control qubits, CNOT gates, basis states, superposition, and Dirac notation.
