Discover to establish is a topology-evolution pattern for novel domains: teams collaborate closely while uncertainty is high, then reduce collaboration as responsibilities and boundaries become clear. section 11.4.3
The pattern typically evolves through these stages:
- Begin with collaboration between teams exploring a novel domain. section 11.4.3
- Increase certainty by helping teams achieve immediate objectives and learning where platform or service boundaries should form. section 11.4.3
- Shift toward XaaS, or remove interaction altogether, once responsibilities become established. section 11.4.3 section 11.6
A first cloud platform
A financial services organization began modernization with a cloud-based application. Stream-aligned teams initially built their applications and platform needs together, while platform engineers joined daily standups and supported serverless applications on AWS. As common capabilities became clearer, platform needs could be extracted into a dedicated platform used by many teams. Extracting too early risked slowing the initial modernization slice. section 11.4.3
