Vlan command

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols

vlan is a Cisco IOS configuration command that creates or selects a VLAN and enters VLAN configuration mode.

The vlan vlan-id command is entered from global configuration mode to create or select a VLAN and enter VLAN configuration mode. From there, name vlan-name optionally labels the VLAN. If no name is configured, Cisco IOS uses a default such as VLAN0010 for VLAN 10. section 12.2.1

Create and name VLANs

SW1(config)# vlan 10 SW1(config-vlan)# name Engineering SW1(config-vlan)# vlan 20 SW1(config-vlan)# name HR SW1(config-vlan)# end SW1# show vlan brief The command sequence creates VLANs 10 and 20, assigns descriptive names, and returns to privileged EXEC mode. show vlan brief verifies the VLAN database.

Operational details to remember:

  • Use no vlan vlan-id from global configuration mode to delete a VLAN entirely. section 12.2.1
  • A VLAN must exist and remain enabled for an associated SVI to reach up/up; distinguish vlan from interface vlan. section 12.4.2

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols covers it

How deep it goes
Explains syntax, configuration mode, naming, shutdown, deletion, and verification, but not VLAN tagging internals.
Examples
Uses Engineering, HR, and Sales VLANs, show vlan brief output, and a locally shut down VLAN 10.
What it assumes
Assumes basic Cisco IOS configuration modes while defining VLANs, broadcast domains, and SVI dependencies.
What you can do after
Operate/configure a Cisco switch by creating, naming, disabling, deleting, and verifying VLANs from the CLI.
How it connects
Connects VLANs with VLAN configuration mode, SVIs, access ports, trunk ports, and Layer 2 broadcast domains.
