The assembly line balancing problem (ALBP) assigns production tasks to workstations while respecting constraints and reducing idle time. It also covers decisions about cycle time, station count, equipment, task assignment, and operation sequence before production begins. section 6.6
Bicycle assembly line
A five-station bicycle line illustrates the idea: stations successively install the frame, forks and handlebars, wheels, drivetrain components, and seat and accessories. A precedence diagram determines which tasks can follow others, while station workloads must fit the cycle time. section 6.6
Common ALBP distinctions include:
- SALBP handles one product on a serial line with one-sided workstations; GALBP includes mixed-model, parallel, U-shaped, and two-sided lines. section 6.6
A tabu-search implementation loads task durations and precedence data, sets a cycle time, initializes a solution, and iterates with tenure and iteration limits. Results can be assessed using workstation count, workloads, and smoothing index.
