Axolotl is a fine-tuning framework that makes large-language-model training more accessible without requiring teams to build a framework from scratch. It reduces tool development, but its configuration choices can be opinionated and its surrounding workflows may involve infrastructure costs. section 12.2.2 section 12.3
A typical Axolotl setup centers on a YAML configuration file:
- Set the dataset path and prompt-template type, such as an RBP dataset hosted on Hugging Face with the alpaca format. section 12.2.3
- Select the base model and tokenizer, such as Meta’s Llama-2 7B model and its LlamaTokenizer. section 12.2.3
- Control training behavior with settings such as sample_packing and num_epochs; the example disables packing and uses four epochs. section 12.2.3
datasets:
- path: 2bittester/rbp-data-set
type: alpaca
The dataset configuration shows how Axolotl connects a hosted dataset to a prompt-template format. section 12.2.3
Axolotl simplifies configuration, not the underlying fine-tuning decisions. Training still depends on tokenization, context-length limits, suitable data, and access to GPU-backed hardware or cloud infrastructure. Testing can follow through automated inference or manual evaluation. section 12.2.2 section 12.3
