A call to action invites an audience to do something with a discovered insight. In a data story, it is the wisdom step: after identifying the main point and setting context, state the next step the audience should consider or take. It can drive discussion, invite suggestions, or direct a concrete decision. section 1.4.3 section 5.2.1
Make the action answer the audience’s decision question rather than leave them to infer a conclusion from the chart. A chart about expanding tourist arrivals, for example, can recommend considering a new swimming pool; the evidence remains visible, but the audience can read the result without performing the analysis themselves. Simplification can omit relevant detail, so a major investment should still be supported by appropriate information. section 2.3.3
Calls to action can take several chart-ready forms:
- A directive title, such as increasing advertising on dog-related websites after finding low dog participation. section 1.4.3
- A text annotation placed beside or below the main visualization to state a proposed next step. section 2.3.3
- A companion chart that compares possible strategies and their stated success percentages. section 3.3.3
- A next-steps panel combining a title, action text, and supporting icons or images. section 9.2.2
From participation counts to a campaign decision
A pets event begins with raw participant counts. The information reveals that one participant in ten is a dog and nine are cats; context attributes poor dog-owner interest to weak dog advertising. Reframe the chart title from “9 pets out of 10 are cats” to “Increase the advertising campaign on dog-related websites!” The final wording turns the finding into an invitation to act. section 1.4.3
Generate action wording for its intended audience. Prompts can ask ChatGPT to act as an inviter to action, produce several titles, and revise titles that merely describe a finding until they explicitly invite behavior. For a real decision, extend the invitation with possible next steps and justify them with appropriate resources. section 5.5.3 section 3.3.3
Listing 9.7 The CTA DataFrame
df_cta = pd.DataFrame(
{'text' : [['Ask other hoteliers', 'for their experience'], ['Invite the administrative team', 'to calculate the costs']],
'x' : [0,9.8],
'img' : ['img/experience.png', 'img/costs.png']})
This DataFrame models a next-steps call to action as positioned text paired with image paths, ready for separate text and image chart layers. section 9.2.2
