A cloud provider SQL Server image makes VM deployment easy and can activate license-included billing, but using it unchanged is a mistake. Provider images optimize for broad convenience, not a carefully governed SQL Server installation. section 8.10
Mistake: treating the provider image as a finished production configuration.
- AWS SQL Server AMIs install every SQL Server feature, including SSMS, even though SSMS is better suited to client machines. section 8.10
- Azure SQL Server images install all features and tools and configure trace flags 1117 and 1118, which may conflict with deliberate configuration standards. section 8.10
- Use the image when license-included pricing is required, then remove unnecessary features and apply configuration management rather than accepting defaults. section 8.10
