containerd is a lightweight container runtime: it runs containers on Kubernetes nodes. It is distinct from Docker Engine, which Docker Compose uses. section 8.1.3 section 7.1.2
Use the runtime distinction to place containerd in a deployment stack:
- Kubernetes runs on clusters of virtual-machine nodes and uses containerd to run containers. section 8.1.3
- Pods provide the smallest Kubernetes unit for running one or more containers, while Deployments define their desired conditions. section 8.1.3
- Docker Engine remains a container runtime for Docker Compose; Kubernetes moving away from it does not mean Kubernetes stopped using containers. section 7.1.2
A Kubernetes deployment
A cluster runs Kubernetes on virtual-machine nodes. A Deployment creates Pods, each Pod runs containers through containerd, and a Service exposes them internally or to the internet. section 8.1.3
