DHCP relay

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security

A DHCP relay agent is an intermediary network device that forwards DHCP messages between clients and remote DHCP servers.

DHCP relay enables clients on one subnet to use a centralized DHCP server on another. Because routers do not forward DHCP broadcast messages, a relay agent converts client DISCOVER and REQUEST broadcasts into unicast packets for the remote server. section 4.2

Configure and verify a Cisco IOS relay as follows:

  • Enter the interface connected to the clients and apply ip helper-address server-ip. section 4.2
  • Use the client-facing interface, because it receives the clients’ broadcast messages. section 4.2
  • Verify the configured helper address with show ip interface interface-name. section 4.4
  • Remember that a helper address can relay broadcast messages for protocols other than DHCP. section 4.2

Cisco IOS configuration and verification

R1(config)# interface g0/0 R1(config-if)# ip helper-address 10.2.2.10 R1(config-if)# do show ip interface g0/0 GigabitEthernet0/0 is up, line protocol is up Helper address is 10.2.2.10 The command makes R1 a relay agent on G0/0; the displayed helper address identifies the remote DHCP server.

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security covers it

How deep it goes
Explains broadcast-to-unicast forwarding, interface placement, Cisco configuration, and verification, but does not detail DHCP packet internals.
Examples
Uses a Cisco R1 G0/0 interface, helper address 10.2.2.10, and show ip interface verification output.
What it assumes
Assumes basic DHCP, subnets, interfaces, and broadcast behavior while defining the relay’s role explicitly.
What you can do after
Operate/configure DHCP relay with ip helper-address and verify its helper address on the client-facing interface.
How it connects
Connects DHCP clients, routers, centralized DHCP servers, broadcast messages, and unicast forwarding.
