Discriminator

As explained in Introduction to Generative AI, Second Edition

A discriminator is the component of a generative adversarial network that evaluates whether data is authentic or synthetic.

A discriminator is one of the two neural networks in a generative adversarial network (GAN). It evaluates whether data is authentic or synthetic by comparing it with the training set. section 4.2

The discriminator competes with the generator: as the generator creates more convincing synthetic data, the discriminator improves at recognizing what is real and what is fake. This feedback loop drives refinement on both sides. section 4.2

The shop owner and the forger

Imagine a shop owner distinguishing authentic artworks from counterfeits while a criminal studies those judgments to make better fakes. The owner represents the discriminator; the criminal represents the generator. section 4.2

How Introduction to Generative AI, Second Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Defines the component and its competitive feedback loop but does not explain implementation details.
Examples
Uses counterfeit artworks and synthetic images to illustrate authenticity judgments.
What it assumes
Introduces GANs through two competing neural networks without requiring prior technical background.
What you can do after
Understand how adversarial feedback helps distinguish generated data from authentic data.
How it connects
Connects the discriminator with generative adversarial networks, generators, synthetic data, and training sets.
