GitHub is a hosted service for storing Git repositories and collaborating on code changes. Keeping code only on a development server makes recovery dependent on that server and its backups. section 7.6.1
Avoid the mistake of treating a development server as source control:
- Store code in a known, secure, reliable repository with version history, so introduced bugs can be rolled back. section 7.6.1
- Use parallel development without locking files, while managing conflicts before merging a branch into the main trunk. section 7.6.1
- In Visual Studio, create the repository, choose a local path and gitignore template, connect a GitHub account, and create a branch. section 7.6.1
MagicChoc’s lost code
MagicChoc could not recover its code after relying on a development server with backups. A GitHub repository would have provided an additional managed copy and recoverable version history. section 7.6.1
