Granularity

As explained in Architecture Modernization: Socio-technical alignment of software, strategy, and structure

Granularity is the level of detail at which a domain story represents a process or business area.

Granularity sets the level of detail used to represent a domain story or business process. A coarse-grained story spans broad business areas and teams; a fine-grained story may decompose one activity into ten or more steps. Keep each domain story at one level rather than mixing scales. section 8.5.2

Use three broad levels when setting the scope of a Domain Storytelling workshop:

  • Coarse-grained: represents large parts of the business, potentially involving multiple domains and teams. section 8.5.2
  • Medium-grained: represents an intermediate level of detail between broad business flows and individual activities. section 8.5.2
  • Fine-grained: breaks down a single activity into a much more detailed sequence, potentially ten or more steps. section 8.5.2

EventStorming and useful detail

Event granularity is subjective: participants may represent some parts of an EventStorm in more detail where discussion is most valuable. Keep domain events focused on domain intention rather than mechanics; “Submit Button Clicked” and “Item Saved to Database” obscure what is happening in the domain. section 7.5

How Architecture Modernization: Socio-technical alignment of software, strategy, and structure covers it

How deep it goes
Distinguishes coarse, medium, and fine levels, and requires each story to remain at one level.
Examples
Uses broad business stories, ten-step activity breakdowns, and intention-focused domain events as contrasting levels of detail.
What you can do after
Apply it via Domain Storytelling or EventStorming to choose useful detail and keep workshop discussions focused.
How it connects
Connects Domain Storytelling, EventStorming, domain events, and workshop scope clarification.
