Knative provides a Kubernetes-based way to run serverless workloads on demand. It suits services that do not need to remain running continuously: inactive applications can scale to zero, then start a pod when a request arrives. section 11.5.3 section 11.5.4
A Quarkus application can target Knative through the Kubernetes deployment extension. The generated resources reference a container image, configure runtime environment variables, and limit concurrent requests per pod. section 11.5.3
A practical Knative deployment follows these steps:
- Create a Quarkus application with Funqy HTTP, a SmallRye GraphQL client, and OpenShift integration. section 11.5.3
- Deploy with ./mvnw clean package -Dquarkus.knative.deploy=true. section 11.5.4
Car-statistics service
A Funqy function calls an Inventory service through GraphQL and returns the current number of available cars. After deployment, requesting /getCarStatistics starts the application when necessary and returns the statistics.
