Mode collapse is a GAN failure in which the generator produces the same output, or only a small range of variations, despite diverse training data. The generator discovers outputs that fool the critic, then becomes stuck as the critic improves. section 9.2.1 section 9.2.3
Inspect mode collapse through these practical signals and interventions:
- Look for generated images that repeat continually or show very little variation. section 9.2.1
- Retune the optimizer first; changing the loss function or unrolling the GAN can also reduce the problem. section 9.2.3
- Add noise to adversarial ground truths as a simple intervention, while recognizing that optimizer discrepancies can still limit the improvement. section 9.2.3
Notebook experiment
Run the GAN optimization notebook for 25 epochs with the mode-collapse optimizer settings and inspect the generated images. Then enable ADD_NOISE and rerun the cells; the output should show increased variation, although results may vary. section 9.2.3
