Qiskit is an open-source SDK for constructing, simulating, compiling, and executing quantum circuits. It supports simulator-first development and can target IBM quantum backends when hardware access is available. section 2.4
A practical Qiskit workflow connects circuit construction to execution:
- Convert a compatible circuit into a Qiskit QuantumCircuit instance. section 2.4 section 12.2.3
- Add measurements and inspect the circuit with Qiskit's draw() method. section 12.2.3
- Select a backend, transpile the circuit for it, and run it through the Sampler primitive. section 12.2.3
- Collect quasi-probability distributions and visualize results with a histogram. section 12.2.3
Running a small circuit on IBM Quantum
Create a three-qubit circuit with Hadamard and multi-controlled-X gates, convert it to Qiskit, measure every qubit, choose an operational non-simulator backend, transpile the circuit, run 1,000 shots, and plot the resulting quasi-probabilities. section 12.2.3
Figure 12.1 Circuit diagram created using Qiskit’s draw() method
Use the circuit diagram to inspect how Qiskit represents gates and measurements before execution. section 12.2.3
