Critical thinking helps a lead developer make decisions without acting on a hunch alone. Consider the risks, form a plan, and keep a level head—especially when a decision must be made under pressure. Technical skill matters, but leading a team also calls for problem-solving and people skills. section 1.3.3 section 12.1.3 section 1.0
Put that thinking to work throughout a decision, not just at the start:
- Consider the risks and make a plan before acting. section 1.3.3
- Share information with the team so people can give consistent feedback and make informed decisions. section 1.3.3
- Check progress and use what the team learns to get back on track when the plan is not working. section 1.3.3
Critical thinking also matters when helping someone else learn. Rather than supplying every answer, help a mentee analyze a problem and identify possible solutions. Guidance and patience give them room to develop their own judgment. section 9.2.1
Look beyond the immediate technical result
A facial-recognition feature that failed to recognize dark-skinned people illustrates why a team needs diverse perspectives and appropriate testing. A lead developer assessing a solution should consider who was included when it was tested, not only whether it worked for the people already in the room. section 12.1.3
The practical habit is to stay open to feedback: make the best decision you can, communicate it, and check whether it is working. section 1.3.3
