SNMPv2c

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security

SNMPv1/SNMPv2c is the family of earlier SNMP versions whose access control is based on shared community strings.

SNMPv2c, or community-based SNMPv2, extends SNMPv1 message support while retaining shared community strings as its access-control mechanism. It adds GetBulk and Inform messages but provides no encryption. section 6.3

SNMPv2c uses two community permissions:

  • Read-only (RO) permits Get, GetNext, and GetBulk requests but rejects Set requests. section 6.3.1
  • Read-write (RW) permits both reading with Get-family requests and modifying values with Set. section 6.3.1
  • An ACL can restrict which NMS sources may use each community string. section 6.3.1

The remaining commands enable traps and identify the NMS receiving SNMPv2c traps or informs.

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security covers it

How deep it goes
Explains message additions, community permissions, Cisco IOS commands, traps, and ACLs without detailing SNMP packet internals.
Examples
Uses RO and RW community scenarios plus Cisco IOS commands for communities, traps, and an NMS host.
What it assumes
Assumes familiarity with NMS-managed devices and SNMP messages while defining communities, permissions, and core operations.
What you can do after
Operate/configure SNMPv2c communities, restrict access with ACLs, and direct traps or informs to an NMS.
How it connects
Contrasts SNMPv1 and SNMPv3 while connecting community strings with NMS, Get, Set, Trap, GetBulk, and Inform operations.
