A test runner is the configuration point that discovers and executes automated scenarios. In Cucumber, it locates feature files, connects them to glue code, and can limit execution or produce result files. section 8.3 section 8.3.1
A practical Cucumber runner typically configures:
- Feature locations, such as a classpath directory or the features folder. section 8.3.1
- Glue-code packages containing the methods that implement Given, When, and Then steps. section 3.5.3
- Tags for selecting a subset of scenarios and plugins for console output or JSON results. section 8.3.1
- A Java test class containing configuration rather than test logic. section 8.3.1
Acceptance test suite
An AcceptanceTestSuite configured with CucumberWithSerenity scans classpath:features, uses a stepdefinitions package as glue, runs @important scenarios, and writes pretty console output plus target/cucumber.json.
