To measure whether developers are joining an API program, capture what they do—not just the API requests they make. A user action is an event for an interaction through a user interface, such as submitting a form or clicking a button. A developer-portal sign-up that issues an API key is one such action. section 11.1.4
Send a Sign-Up user action event to Moesif when a developer registers, then chart daily new sign-ups as a time series. An increase in sign-ups might lead to more active users, but that is a hypothesis to test, not a result the chart establishes. section 11.1.4
Simulated sign-ups and API calls
A GitHub Actions workflow uses simulate-signups.js to create sign-ups and send Sign-Up events to Moesif. After a delay, simulate-apicalls.js makes sandbox and production requests; the Kong gateway sends separate API Call events. This distinguishes portal behavior from subsequent API use. section 11.1.4
Figure 11.7 The workflow file simulates user sign-ups to a developer portal and API calls to the gateway. It sends the associated user action events and API call events to Moesif.
The event-flow diagram shows where simulated sign-ups and gateway API calls enter Moesif. section 11.1.4
