A video interview is a remote job interview conducted through digital communication technology. Because companies use different platforms, preparation includes confirming how to join and checking what the interviewer will see. section 8.6
Before the interview, make the setup easy for both sides:
- Confirm the meeting link, meeting ID, and any required software; test the platform in advance, possibly with a friend. section 8.6
- Check lighting, webcam angle, background, and anything distracting on screen. Position the camera at eye level, using books to raise a laptop or monitor if needed. section 8.6
- Afterward, obtain every interviewer’s name and contact information so you can send individual thank-you messages and follow up. section 8.17
When the technology fails
One candidate downloaded an unfamiliar videoconference platform but could not join when the interview began. She switched to her phone, arrived late, and felt the interview had gone badly. The company later offered her the job. The lesson is not to rely on confidence or technical skill alone: test the link and platform before the scheduled time. section 8.6
A preventable late arrival
Clark failed to check his invitation link and arrived fifteen minutes late to a video interview. Although the interviewer was understanding, he did not receive another interview. Future preparation meant checking access beforehand and closing by explaining why he was a strong fit, asking about next steps, and thanking each interviewer. section 13.9 section 8.17
