Windows is a Microsoft operating-system family that can host SQL Server. Treating it as the automatic choice is a mistake: SQL Server also supports Ubuntu, SUSE, Red Hat, and Docker from version 2017 onward. section 8.2
Mistake #34: using Windows indiscriminately creates practical trade-offs.
- MagicChoc’s Go application ran on Ubuntu, so requiring Linux-based developers to switch to Windows increased the barrier to entry. section 8.2
- Choosing Windows Server 2022 also retained a server-license cost that an Ubuntu deployment could have avoided. section 8.2
- SQL Server features such as AlwaysOn, HIERARCHYID, and windowing functions may still be requirements, even when Windows is not the best host. section 8.2
MagicChoc’s platform decision
MagicChoc selected SQL Server on Windows Server 2022 because its DBAs lacked MySQL experience and wanted advanced SQL Server capabilities. For an Ubuntu-based application, that choice raised developer and licensing concerns. section 8.2
