CIDR notation describes an IP address range with an address and a prefix mask, giving subnets a precise portion of a network’s available addresses. section 4.2.1
Read CIDR ranges by separating the address from the mask:
- In 10.1.0.8/16, 10.1.0.8 is the address and /16 is the mask length. section 4.2.1
- Applying the mask with a bitwise AND produces a range from 10.1.0.0 through 10.1.255.255, containing 65,536 possible hosts. section 4.2.1
- Azure reserves five IP addresses in subnets sized /25 and larger, and four in smaller subnets. section 4.2.1
Creating an Azure subnet
A PowerShell subnet configuration can assign 10.0.1.0/24 as the address range for hairstyleSubnet in AlpacaVNet. The configuration remains local until Set-AzVirtualNetwork provisions it in Azure. section 4.2
