Developer productivity measures the value and progress developers create relative to the effort and resources involved. In platform engineering, it is treated as an outcome: better platforms should reduce friction, accelerate delivery, improve reliability, and increase developer satisfaction. section 3.0 section 10.1.1
Measure productivity through a balanced set of signals:
- Track delivery flow with lead time for changes, deployment frequency, and developer wait time. section 10.1.1
- Track adoption and autonomy through golden-path usage, active users, and self-service deployments completed without platform-team intervention. section 10.1.1
- Balance speed with quality and reliability using DORA metrics, incident trends, defect reduction, telemetry coverage, and mean time to detect or resolve incidents. section 10.1.1
- Use developer satisfaction, code quality, and test coverage as leading indicators, then connect improvements to business outcomes such as faster onboarding and increased revenue potential. section 3.0 section 10.8
