Eui-64 keyword

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols

An EUI-64 interface identifier is a 64-bit IPv6 interface identifier derived using the Extended Unique Identifier format.

The eui-64 keyword tells Cisco IOS to generate an IPv6 interface identifier automatically. Place it after a /64 prefix in the ipv6 address command. IOS derives the 64-bit host portion from the interface’s 48-bit MAC address. section 20.4.2 section 20.6

Convert the MAC address into the Modified EUI-64 identifier in three steps:

  • Divide the 48-bit MAC address into two halves. section 20.4.2
  • Insert the reserved 16-bit value fffe between the halves. section 20.4.2
  • Invert the seventh bit, which is the third bit of the second hexadecimal digit. section 20.4.2
  • Combine the resulting identifier with the configured /64 prefix to form the complete IPv6 address. section 20.4.2 section 20.6

Cisco IOS configuration

R1(config)# interface g0/2 R1(config-if)# ipv6 address 2001:db8:0:2::/64 eui-64 R1(config-if)# no shutdown For MAC address 0060.2f62.b803, IOS creates interface identifier 0260:2fff:fe62:b803 and address 2001:db8:0:2:260:2fff:fe62:b803. section 20.4.2

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 1 Fundamentals and Protocols covers it

How deep it goes
Explains command syntax and the three conversion steps, but does not extend into implementation internals.
Examples
Uses Cisco IOS output, MAC-to-identifier conversions, and a worked R1 G0/2 address.
What it assumes
Assumes basic IPv6 prefixes and MAC addresses while teaching the identifier conversion from zero.
What you can do after
Apply it via Cisco IOS and convert MAC addresses into Modified EUI-64 identifiers for CCNA practice.
How it connects
Connects IPv6 addressing with MAC addresses, SLAAC, NDP, and IPv6 prefixes.
