Mean time to resolution

As explained in Platform Engineering on Kubernetes

Time to restore service is the elapsed time required to recover from a production problem and return a service to normal operation.

Mean time to resolution, called time to restore service in DORA metrics, measures how long it takes to recover from a production problem and return service to normal operation. section 9.1

It is one of the recovery metrics used to assess software delivery performance. To calculate it, teams collect data from delivery systems, standardize and process that data, then store and share the resulting metrics. section 9.1 section 9.2.2

A metrics pipeline can:

  • Collect events from different systems and adapt non-CloudEvents inputs to the CloudEvents format. section 9.2.2
  • Transform and process the data to calculate metrics, store the results, and make them available through a dashboard. section 9.2.2

How Platform Engineering on Kubernetes covers it

How deep it goes
Defines elapsed recovery time and places it among recovery indicators, but gives no metric-specific calculation formula.
Examples
Illustrates recovery metrics with a data-source architecture and a pipeline for collecting, transforming, calculating, storing, and exposing metrics.
What it assumes
Requires data from delivery systems and event sources; adapts inputs that do not follow CloudEvents to that format.
What you can do after
Apply it by collecting event data, standardizing inputs, calculating metrics, and storing results for sharing through a dashboard.
How it connects
Links time to restore service with change failure rate, DORA metrics, and continuous delivery performance.
