A request for online membership renewal sounds clear, but it does not explain why the organization needs it. Members may want an easier process; a sales manager may want to reduce sales lost when memberships lapse. Business value is the benefit the capability is meant to deliver. Naming that benefit helps the team decide whether renewal is the right feature—or whether another approach would serve the goal better. section 5.2.1 section 4.2.5
Start feature discussions with the goal, then identify the stakeholder and the capability they need. Ask why a requested solution matters rather than accepting a feature list unchanged. Keep that conversation open as understanding evolves: early feedback may show that a different feature would deliver more value or that the proposed one matters less than expected. section 3.2.3 section 2.3.1 section 2.3.3
Feature: Online membership renewal In order to reduce lost sales from lapsing memberships #1 As Flying High sales manager #2 I want members to be able to renew their membership online #3
This feature description ties online renewal to reducing lost sales and identifies the sales manager as the stakeholder concerned with that outcome. section 5.2.1
Business value also guides how work is divided and delivered. A feature that users can use and test on its own may be worth deploying without waiting for other features. A single card-payment option might instead be only a User Story if it offers little value in isolation. Ask business stakeholders whether a smaller release would already be useful; the answer depends on their circumstances, not just the size of the implementation. section 5.2.2
The test is the business goal, not whether the team implemented every originally requested detail. Concentrating on demonstrably valuable features can bring useful capabilities to users earlier and avoid the cost of low-value work. When a solution proves difficult or assumptions change, a shared goal lets the team consider another way to deliver the same benefit. section 2.4.2 section 4.2.5 section 4.2.8
