Product-market fit (PMF) means being in a good market with a product that can satisfy it. In plain language: customers have a real need, the product solves it well enough, and they will pay for it—the dogs will eat the dog food. A good startup idea is not enough if the market will not respond. section 15.2 section 15.0
Market is the factor to treat most seriously. Teams and products can be changed, but a weak market is far harder to repair before cash runs out. Look for a growing market, ideally one changing fast enough to create an opening for a startup. Creating an entirely new market is possible, but described as exceedingly rare. section 15.2 section 15.4
Treat PMF as a milestone before trying to scale:
- Use an MVP and lighthouse customers to establish a product that at least one customer accepts as sellable. section 11.0
- Prove that the product can satisfy the chosen market before completing the broader go-to-market process. section 15.1
- Avoid building a sales team while PMF is uncertain; salespeople need a ready product and a repeatable path to deals. section 25.2
- Use proven PMF and market traction as preparation for institutional-investor conversations. section 7.0 section 11.0
Airbnb: serving both sides of a disrupted market
Airbnb is presented as a PMF example because it gave bed-and-breakfast owners a browser-based way to create and deliver listings, brought prospective renters to them, and handled financial transactions. The owners received value they would pay fees for, while renters could find rooms; matching those groups formed the market the product satisfied. section 15.2
PMF is not merely a pitch slide or a few isolated sales. A handful of early deals may come from founders or executives, but that does not establish a steady, growing stream of business. When the product does not work as advertised or demand is not repeatable, scaling sales can waste money rather than solve the underlying problem. section 25.2 section 15.0
The practical moral is uncomfortable: prioritize finding a market that will buy before assuming execution can rescue everything else. A strong team, product, marketing function, and sales effort matter, but PMF anchors the later work of go-to-market and growth. section 15.4 section 24.0
