Recovery point objective

As explained in MongoDB 8.0 in Action, Third Edition

A recovery point objective is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss expressed as elapsed time.

A recovery point objective (RPO) is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss, expressed as elapsed time. Atlas restore choices determine how closely recovery can approach the required point. section 21.1.2

Atlas provides three restoration paths:

  • Automated Restore returns a cluster to a specific saved snapshot. section 21.1.2
  • Point-in-Time Restore targets a specific UNIX timestamp within the past 24 hours for more precise recovery. section 21.1.2
  • Download Restore downloads the data from a specified snapshot. section 21.1.2

Restoring to a precise recovery point

Use Point-in-Time Restore with the source cluster, UNIX timestamp, target cluster, and target project. Restoring to a different target preserves the original cluster for testing or validation. section 21.1.2

How MongoDB 8.0 in Action, Third Edition covers it

How deep it goes
Defines RPO and distinguishes three restore paths, but does not quantify backup schedules or recovery duration.
Examples
Uses Atlas cluster names, snapshot IDs, project IDs, and a UNIX timestamp in restore commands.
What it assumes
Requires a source cluster, snapshot ID, target cluster, and project ID for cluster restores.
What you can do after
Operate/configure Atlas CLI to restore snapshots or recover a cluster to a recent point in time.
How it connects
Connects RPO with automated restore, point-in-time restore, download restore, and continuous Cloud Backup.
