SNMP Response

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security

An SNMP Response is a message from an agent that returns the result or requested values for a manager request or confirms receipt of an Inform message.

An SNMP Response is the reply message exchanged after an SNMP operation. A managed device sends it to answer a manager’s Get, GetNext, GetBulk, or Set request; the NMS sends it to acknowledge an Inform. section 6.2.4 section 6.1.1

Interpret a Response according to the message that triggered it:

  • Get, GetNext, and GetBulk responses return requested or discovered OIDs and their values. section 6.2.4
  • A Set response follows the managed device’s requested MIB change and reports the resulting exchange. section 6.1.1
  • An Inform response confirms that the NMS received the managed device’s Inform message. section 6.2.4
  • The SNMP agent sends Responses from the managed device toward the manager, which listens on UDP port 162; the agent listens on UDP port 161. section 6.1.2

Interface-status query

An NMS sends a Get request for R1’s GigabitEthernet0/1 status variable. R1 replies with a Response containing the requested information; the illustrated exchange reports the interface as down. A Set exchange similarly returns a Response after R1 changes the interface status to up. section 6.1.1

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security covers it

How deep it goes
Defines response direction and contents for each triggering message, but does not detail packet encoding or error fields.
Examples
Uses GigabitEthernet0/1 status queries and changes to illustrate Get, Set, and Response exchanges.
What it assumes
Assumes familiarity with NMS, SNMP manager, SNMP agent, MIB, and basic Get, Set, and Inform operations.
What you can do after
Evaluate SNMP exchanges by identifying the requester, responder, triggering message, returned values, or Inform acknowledgment.
How it connects
Connects SNMP managers, SNMP agents, NMS devices, MIBs, Get, GetNext, GetBulk, Set, Inform, and UDP ports 161 and 162.
