A task is the specific operation or result a generative AI system should perform or produce. Clear task instructions keep the response relevant and give a prompt a concrete objective. section 4.2.1 section 4.2
Common tasks include:
- Generating titles or subtitles. section 4.2.1
- Summarizing or translating text. section 4.2.1
- Proposing ideas, annotations, or commentaries for data visualizations. section 4.2.1 section 7.3
A task works best when it is combined with a role and an audience. For chart context, the prompt can also specify the topic and the type of text required. If the result misses the goal, adjust one or more elements and try again. section 7.3 section 4.2
From text to title
Given a passage about fragility, vulnerability, and resilience, an effective task instruction is: “Generate the title for the text in angular brackets <text>.” Possible results include “Embracing Fragility: The Path to Remarkable Resilience and Authentic Living.” Adding a role can make the requested title more specific. section 4.2.1
