Serverless computing is a vendor-managed cloud model that lets developers deploy lightweight functions without setting up orchestration infrastructure. The platform runs orchestration behind the scenes, but exposes little or no control over its implementation or extensibility. section 2.3.5
Serverless is useful when speed outweighs the need for platform customization:
- Deploys small functions, commonly written in JavaScript, Golang, Python, or Java, that each do one or two things quickly. section 2.3.5
- Avoids initial cluster setup, allowing developers to deploy directly to a cloud platform. section 2.3.5
- Limits centrally governed customization for secret injection, code-signing verification, static analysis, traffic routing, and identity verification. section 2.3.5
Choosing serverless for a lightweight function
A team can deploy a small Python or JavaScript function quickly when standard vendor controls are sufficient. If the platform must enforce organization-specific security or governance behavior, managed Kubernetes provides more extensibility. section 2.3.5
