SNMP software

As explained in Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security

An SNMP entity is the complete SNMP implementation running on an SNMP-capable device or management system.

SNMP software is the complete SNMP implementation running on an SNMP-capable device or management system. This implementation is called an SNMP entity. On an NMS, the entity contains an SNMP manager and SNMP application; on a managed device, it contains an SNMP agent and MIB. section 6.1.2 section 6.4

The entity coordinates monitoring and management through these roles:

  • The manager sends Get messages to read MIB variables and Set messages to modify them; the agent listens on UDP port 161. section 6.1.2 section 6.4
  • The agent returns Response messages and sends Trap notifications for events such as an interface going down; the manager listens on UDP port 162. section 6.1.2 section 6.4
  • The application gives administrators a human-facing interface for monitoring and managing devices, while MIB variables may be addressed by hierarchical OIDs. section 6.1.2 section 6.4

PRTG monitoring

PRTG Network Monitor can periodically send SNMP Get messages, such as every 60 seconds, to monitor interface traffic, CPU and memory utilization, power-supply health, and temperature. section 6.1.2

Figure 6.4 The components of the NMS’s and managed devices’ SNMP entities. The NMS’s SNMP entity consists of the SNMP manager and SNMP application(s). The managed devices’ SNMP entities consist of the SNMP agent and the MIB.

Use the component diagram to distinguish the NMS-side manager and application from the managed-device agent and MIB. section 6.1.2

How Acing the CCNA Exam: Volume 2 Advanced Networking and Security covers it

How deep it goes
Explains entity composition, message directions, UDP ports, MIB operations, applications, and OIDs without configuration procedures.
Examples
Uses PRTG polling and interface, CPU, memory, power-supply, and temperature variables as monitoring examples.
What you can do after
Operate SNMP monitoring by distinguishing NMS and device components, message directions, ports, and MIB access operations.
How it connects
Connects SNMP managers, agents, applications, MIBs, OIDs, NMSs, managed devices, Get, Set, Response, and Trap messages.
