An epoch is one complete pass through the training dataset. In production model training, it is a practical unit for estimating runtime, monitoring progress, and comparing model improvements. section 8.1.6 section 8.1.7
Increasing the epoch count can affect several operational outcomes:
- Improves accuracy as the model receives more training loops. section 8.1.7
- Can increase confidence by exposing the model to more examples of the target class. section 8.1.7
- Can improve robustness against conditions such as varying lighting or viewing angles. section 8.1.7
- Extends pipeline runtime; one epoch took about one hour on the described Kubernetes cluster. section 8.1.6
Choosing a practical training run
A single epoch produced promising but imperfect ID-card detection, while about five epochs substantially improved the bounding box and confidence. The appropriate count depends on dataset complexity and project requirements. section 8.1.7
