Summarization

As explained in Data Analysis with LLMs

Text summarization is the production of a shorter text that preserves the most important information from a source text.

Text summarization turns a longer passage into a shorter account of its important points. For product reviews, a summary can make a customer’s praise and complaints easier to inspect before looking for patterns across many reviews. section 2.3 section 2.5

Summarize a product review

A laptop review praises a screen that works in bright sunshine and sufficient speed for coding and office work. It criticizes the laptop’s weight but considers the price a good deal. In ChatGPT, provide the review and a specific request: “Summarize this review in two sentences. Include the main strengths, the drawback, and the reviewer’s overall judgment.” The review is the input; the instruction specifies what the shorter output should preserve. section 2.3 section 2.5

Check the result against the original review: language models can produce incorrect output. For a large collection of reviews, ChatGPT is not suited to processing the whole dataset directly, though it can generate code for processing large data with other tools. section 2.5

How Data Analysis with LLMs covers it

How deep it goes
Introduces summarization as an instruction-driven text task; does not explain a summarization algorithm or model internals.
Examples
Uses a laptop review praising its screen and speed, criticizing its weight, and approving its price.
What it assumes
Starts with entering text and instructions in a web browser, without requiring advanced Python or model internals.
What you can do after
Apply it via the ChatGPT web interface by supplying text and a task description that specifies the desired summary.
How it connects
Connects summarization with text classification, information extraction, review analysis, and code generation for larger datasets.
