Migration

As explained in Delivering Machine Learning Projects: From design to deployment

Data migration is the transfer of data between storage systems, formats, schemas, or operational environments.

Data migration moves existing data assets into a new operating environment. In a cloud project, its completion date can determine when production data becomes available and when new applications can be deployed. section 4.9

When delivery must begin before migration finishes:

  • Confirm the migration date and obtain the permissions needed to set up working environments. section 4.9
  • Agree an interim data source with the migration architect and security stakeholders. A one-time copy can support development without taking on the migration project's data-feed dependencies. section 4.9
  • Plan separately for production data to provision a suitable test subset, and for development assets to be commissioned into test and production. section 4.9

How Delivering Machine Learning Projects: From design to deployment covers it

How deep it goes
Works through an interim provisioning decision but leaves the migration project's data feeds and dependencies to that project.
Examples
Uses a week-seven migration deadline, a one-time opdis2 copy, and a dev/test/prod provisioning diagram.
What it assumes
Assumes an existing data asset and environment setup work; does not teach the mechanics of migrating data feeds.
What you can do after
Evaluate/understand it by identifying a migration deadline's delivery risk and planning approved interim development data.
How it connects
Links migration to cloud infrastructure, access permissions, development environments, test environments, production environments, and security approval.
