A digital image is a separate file containing encoded visual data that a browser retrieves and displays on a web page. Images can enliven text, supplement explanations, present information concisely, and help readers remember it. section 4.2.4 section 10.2
Use digital images practically by:
- Keeping the image file with the page files and knowing its filename before generating or editing the HTML. section 4.2.4 section 4.5
- Referencing the file with an HTML img element and its src attribute; add alt text to describe the image for screen readers and Braille apps. section 10.9
- Using a separate smaller thumbnail file when displaying thumbnail images, and placing a larger version in a lightbox when needed. section 10.9
