Mean

As explained in Machine Learning System Design

The arithmetic average of a set of numerical values.

For a retail sales forecast, the mean of an SKU’s sales over the previous N days is a candidate feature. It is the arithmetic average: add the sales values and divide by the number of values. This gives the model one summary of recent sales, alongside candidates such as the sum, minimum, maximum, and standard deviation. section 11.5.1

A useful summary is not automatically a useful feature. Test whether the mean improves forecasts, then weigh any gain against interpretability, computation time, and feature stability. section 11.5.1

How Machine Learning System Design covers it

How deep it goes
Lists the mean among candidate sales aggregates but does not specify a computation procedure or how to choose N.
Examples
Uses an SKU’s sales over the previous N days as the concrete setting for a mean feature.
What you can do after
Evaluate/understand it as a candidate forecasting feature, considering prediction quality alongside computation time, interpretability, and stability.
How it connects
Connects feature engineering and sales forecasting with other historical-sales summaries, including sum, minimum, maximum, standard deviation, median, and quantiles.
