A parameter is a learned numerical value that shapes part of a model’s behavior. Parameter count is the model’s rough size label: 7B means about seven billion parameters. More parameters can capture finer language patterns and context, but they demand more training data, computation, storage, and capable hardware. Bigger is useful; bigger is not free. section 1.6 section 9.2
When working with parameters, keep these practical distinctions in view:
- Parameter count describes model capacity, not guaranteed quality; specialized models may still suit particular tasks better. section 1.6
- Parameters are stored in weight sets that may need to be downloaded separately from the model software. section 9.2
- Configuration parameters are different: they control how an installed model runs, including paths, context size, sampling, threads, and quantization choices. section 9.3
From parameter count to a running model
A model listing might identify a 3B model, meaning roughly three billion parameters. Running it still requires the matching weight file and a configured launcher. With RedPajama, the command can point redpajama-chat at a .bin weight file while setting context length, threads, sampling values, and other configuration parameters. section 9.2 section 9.3
/path/to/downloaded/llama/weights
Use the weight-file path as the concrete bridge between parameter storage and model configuration; replace the placeholder with the downloaded file location. section 9.3
