Automation executes workflow activities through systems instead of repeated manual intervention. In ML engineering, it organizes nonlinear experimentation and production workflows into orchestrated pipelines, reducing mistakes and accelerating iteration. section 1.1.1 section 1.2.1
Production automation supports several operational goals:
- Automate model evaluation on curated holdout data to eliminate human variability and produce repeatable results. section 2.1.4
- Preserve reproducibility across development, staging, and production environments, supporting trust, auditing, and regulatory compliance. section 1.2.1
- Automate container builds and deployments through CI/CD to reduce manual errors and keep changes consistently tested and deployed. section 3.6
- Expose pipeline metrics and sanity checks so teams can shorten feedback loops and debug model outputs more effectively. section 8.2
Automated ML evaluation and deployment
A production pipeline can train a model, evaluate it against a versioned holdout dataset, inspect metrics, and continue through containerized deployment. If evaluation exposes leakage, drift, or unacceptable errors, the workflow returns to data preparation or retraining instead of relying on an untracked manual decision. section 1.1.1 section 2.1.4
